Exciting Experiences on the Columbus Commons

  |     |   Living in Columbus, Oakwood News

Columbus is becoming a trendy and thriving metropolis, with its downtown district growing to contain skyscrapers, restored historic buildings, and beautiful green spaces. Located in the heart of Downtown Columbus sits the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons, a multi-use park and recreation space that operates as a central gathering place for Columbus residents. Every year the Commons features over 200 different events, which is a lot to digest, so we compiled a list of a few of our favorites. You won’t want to miss these experiences on the Commons!

Food Truck Court. Every Thursday May through October, food trucks from all around Columbus gather on the Columbus Commons from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. This year, the weekly event is hosted by Oakwood community Highpoint on Columbus Commons, a luxury apartment community overlooking the Commons. On Thursdays during the sunniest time of year, you can stroll down during your lunchtime to snag a meal from the diverse lineup of trucks that rotate through the Commons – snack on staples like Pitabilities or Mya’s Fried Chicken or check out food from the rotating lineup.

Concerts. Numerous performances have graced the Columbus Bicentennial Pavilion stage, with more concerts coming this summer, many of them free of charge. The concert series for the summer includes performances by local theater and music group Shadowbox Live as well as popular bands, many of which are Columbus natives, like Doc Robinson and the Floorwalkers. On June 1, the Commons hosts the Summer 614 event, a musical lineup of R&B and hip hop artists complemented by food, drinks, and vendors.

Fitness Classes. The Columbus Commons can help you get fit, too! Seven Studios works with United Healthcare to coordinate and sponsor free fitness classes all summer long. The classes vary from cardio and kickboxing to yoga and pilates, so there’s something for everyone. If you can’t make one of the classes, though, the park offers wide walkways for walking and running. Bring your own yoga mat or blanket to get a quick stretch on and find your inner peace in the middle of the city.

Family Fun. It can be hard to keep kids entertained during the summer. The Commons has family-focused events throughout the summer in order to create a kid-friendly atmosphere in the middle of downtown. Commons for the Kids and Family Fun Day bring inflatables and crafts to the Commons, so little ones can get out their energy and practice their creativity during the long summer. Family friendly movie nights occur throughout the summer, too, where families can gather under the stars and enjoy a tale on the big screen. Every day the Columbus Commons Carousel is available to take your little one for a spin—or yourself!

Relax. The Commons is a public green space, so feel free to enjoy it for yourself. The Commons has twelve gardens that are maintained by Franklin Park Conservatory during every season. There’s plenty of seating available and gorgeous views of the Columbus skyline, as you’ll be sitting right in the city center when you’re visiting the Commons. Pack up a lunch and picnic blanket to spread out on the greenspace during your lunch time, or bring someone special to make a date of it.
